Cheddar Broccoli Gratin with French Fried Onions

Ingredients

  • 2 lb. broccoli florets, fresh or frozen
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 cups grated sharp cheddar
  • 1/2 cup crumbled croutons
  • 1/2 cup French fried onions

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Grease a medium baking dish with cooking spray.
  2. Steam fresh broccoli for 5 minutes or frozen broccoli for 10 minutes. Transfer the broccoli to the baking dish.
  3. Bring a saucepan to medium heat and melt the butter. Then add the flour. Cook and stir for 1 minute. Stir in the whole milk, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and nutmeg. Bring to a boil while stirring regularly. Reduce heat to low and let simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the grated cheddar.
  4. Pour the cheese sauce over the broccoli. Sprinkle the crumbled croutons and French fried onions over top.
  5. Place the dish into the oven and bake for 30 minutes, until the top is lightly browned.
